Maybe that crossing was prone to accidents at night? That's the only reason why I'd suspect those are there.

The CTA likes to use interesting signals for stations next to crossings.

For those newer to the forum/website, the CTA used to have almost all Griswold equipment (see below). They started upgrading most crossings around the early 2000's to what we see today. It would appear a majority of those gate lantern lights that Brick mentioned were recycled to the new equipment.

It's not hard to find an active GSV image as these signals get a ton of use. On a busy weekday I'm sure there could easily be 100+ activations a day. Keeps their maintainers busy I'm sure!

I've always thought it was kind of strange that a major rapid transit system, metro, subway, or whatever, would use such vintage on their crossings let alone have crossings.

On Melbourne's suburban rail system (ran by Metro Trains, the same company behind Dumb Ways To Die,) there's a lot of crossings on the network (currently around 170, though they're removing 50 of them via grade separation,) There's several signals that date back to the 60's or 70's. Such examples include...

Nice finds! Although Metro Trains (Melbourne) is more of a commuter rail, still pretty neat seeing old signals on a commuter rail!
