Classic Signals in Wallan, VIC! :TUP1: Old WRRS gate mechs, wishbone gates, and a Teardrop Bell!

By 2014, GONE! Boo!

That black painted hybrid bell on the old signals was cool:

For some reason, some of the hybrid bells are painted completely black. I don't know why though.

Here's some more classic signals that will soon be no more (thanks to traffic congestion and Dan the Destructior. )

I might of posted this before, but I found out that this crossing on the Upfield line had a newer 'flat' gate for some reason. Usually they use A-frame gates for suburban crossings in Melbourne, but they didn't at this crossing for some reason...

By 2014, the gate had been replaced with an A-frame gate.

Some interesting odds and ends in Melbourne.

The Heatherton Road level crossing in Noble Park is located next to a roundabout. They have these interesting wig-wag traffic signals that are active when a train is approaching.

https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.964 ... 312!8i6656
As you can see, the crossing is active in this shot and a train is crossing. For some reason, they turn off when the gates have lowered (based of a visit of this crossing and Noble Park station.
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.964 ... 312!8i6656
Another odd thing about this crossing is that they have a cantilever signal behind a mast signal. There's a few crossings like this in Melbourne...
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.965 ... 312!8i6656

A few crossings are located next to traffic intersections, thus on some occasions, crossing signals can act as both a traffic & crossing signal! Here's an example in Clayton.

https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.924 ... 312!8i6656
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.923 ... 312!8i6656
Also, this signal acts as three things! A traffic signal, a crossing signal, and a streetlight!
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.923 ... 312!8i6656

Yellow painted crossing masts.

https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.929 ... 312!8i6656

S'more signals which are both traffic and crossing signals.

https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.894 ... 312!8i6656

Interestingly, they've mounted a two track sign on top of the cantilever.
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.860 ... 312!8i6656
The same crossing active in 2007.
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.860 ... 328!8i1664
This is another crossing which has a cantilever signal behind a mast signal.
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.860 ... 312!8i6656

Aside from being one of the four locations were trams crossed at-grade with train tracks, the former Burke Road level crossing in Glen Iris also had these mini gates for the trams. They used the same Westinghouse gate mechanisms used for pedestrian crossings. The actual gate had a reflector on it as well as a lantern light (the same used on most level crossing boom gates in Melbourne.)

https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.853 ... 312!8i6656
Here's the crossing active in 2013.
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.852 ... 312!8i6656
As I've pointed out many times before, the rest of the tram crossings in Melbourne have hinged gates that keep clear of overhead tram wires.
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.839 ... 312!8i6656
All tramsquare crossings in Melbourne are manually controlled from a signal hut near the crossing.
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.839 ... 312!8i6656

This signal has three flashers on it!
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-38.038 ... 312!8i6656

Tall mast signal.
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-38.052 ... 312!8i6656

Yet another cantilever signal behind mast signal setup. The 'STOP ON RED SIGNAL' sign is also mounted on a separate post.

Those are some wild signals. Any plans to send some photos to the site at all?

I've got a few already. You'll see the following crossings from me in the Christmas Day update...
  • Webb Street, Narre Warren
  • Poath Road, Hughesdale
  • Murrumbeena Road, Murrumbeena
  • Koornang Road, Carnegie (If I can get more pictures of it soon)
I was unable to get good pictures of the Heatherton Road level crossing due to the sheer amount of traffic on the day. (I'll have to revisit it later), and Clayton was a construction zone thanks to the crossing removal works (I'll get it when the traffic volume is low and there's trains running.)
Expect several more from me in the coming updates. Some crossings I'm eyeing are...
  • Glenferrie Road, Kooyong (hopefully the hybrid bells are still there!)
  • High Street, Glen Iris
  • Union Road, Surrey Hills
  • Blackburn Road, Blackburn (Better be quick with this one as it will be gone by the start of next year)
  • High Street, Reservoir (The most insane crossing ever!)
North Road, Ormond would of been nice to add to the site, but it's already been removed. :OhWell:

The last one in the list will be added to the site regardless.

I'll be sure to get extra pictures of it. I'll also retake the track views too...

This passive crossing in Beelbangera, New South Wales still had an old-style advance warning sign in 2010. Wonder if it's still there?:

There used to be one at the Racecourse Road level crossing in Pakenham.
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-38.082 ... 312!8i6656
But it's since been replaced with a newer one. (I think it was around 2012-ish)
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-38.082 ... 312!8i6656

Here's an outdated passive crossing with "GIVE WAY TO TRAINS" signs.

I forgot about this one on Maidstone St, Altona. I can confirm it's still there! Shame it looks so tired though:
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.863 ... 312!8i6656

Strangely, a modern sign has also been installed further down the road:
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.864 ... 312!8i6656

It's interesting to note that this crossing still has Westinghouse Hybrid Bells and Westinghouse Pedestrian Gate Mechs. This means that (apart from the LED light upgrade of the early 2000's and the replacement of the black and white gates around 2007) the equipment at this crossing is all original from when the line first opened in 1985!:
