Strange crossing installation. And yes, this is the location of the 2015 UP Train-car collision.

Why are the bases too long?
Why is this light have an extension attached to it and raised?

Is that a GS Type 3 E-Bell?

Used to be some nice gateless signals there with 12x20 inch Lex-C lights and a Safetran mechanical bell (along with one Safetran 12x24). The one mast is that tall due to how long the gate is.

To better angle the lights to make them more visible coming around the curve, along with keeping the lights out of the way of the gate. The raised part is due to how the extension pieces are made. The old signal had a similar set-up:

Probably, but no way of knowing for sure without hearing it.

Even though the GRS Lex-C lights are gone, this is a change I actually fully endorse. The accident that happened there was just too frightening to see on camera, and if I were there with those other three railfans, I would have probably been forever traumatized by the event as well.
Crossing pictures from Plant City, FL are finally here! viewtopic.php?f=13&t=2538

I agree, the change was for the best.

Probably been posted before.
Active crossing in Huntsville, AL.

Because of how fuzzy the image is, the Safetran 12x24 looks like it has LED's installed in them!
Hold your horses, is that a Conrail unit?

I wonder if this crossing used to be passive back in the day.

The sun is shining into the lenses on these lights!

Yep! I don't think they were too uncommon ten years ago.

Maybe, it looks like it could have been. That crossing is on the site. Looks like they tried putting a new stop sign onto an old one! It is also an FRA violation to have stop signs at signalized crossings. https://www.google.com/maps/@34.6061811 ... 312!8i6656

Looks like the light is coming from the side opens of the lights.
