That's a 1980s NS install with an e-bell.
When did NS switch from 12x24" lights to 12x20?
Sometime in the early to mid 1990s.

Maybe originally for clearance... to allow room for an A frame gate? It looks like to me though that they installed them backwards. Usually the longer "arms" will be towards the gate side, then spread out to allow for the room.

That is really oldd. I wonder why they only installed one signal? That has to be an FRA violation. Although I guess one signal is better than none.
I wonder if maybe there was a wig wag there originally? And once they took it out of commision they were just too lazy to bury the wires for the other side?

However, it has now gone since the crossing is now quad gated and now a No Horn Zone. Whats stranger is the DOT tag is on every signal.

Nice though that they kept the cantilever intact... very rare to see that these days with an "upgrade".

The crossing got a new relay cabinet as well. Here is the work when it was in progress:

Guess you haven't seen CSX upgrade signals at crossings with cantilevers (that actually keep them), as 99% of the time the cantilever stays while the lights/bells/gates/cabinet get replaced.

It happened in Decherd, TN:
http://www.rxrsignals.com/Tennessee/Decherd/Main/

Didn't happen in Athens, AL though:
http://www.rxrsignals.com/Alabama/Athens/Market/

Estill Springs, TN has a weird case. It kinda happened here, as one of the gateless cantilevers was replaced, but the other cantilever appears to have either been left, or was replaced an the old Modern Industries splice-box was re-used on it:
http://www.rxrsignals.com/Tennessee/Est ... ings/UTSI/

And then there's this one in nearby Tullahoma, TN where CSX left the old gateless cantilevers and overhead lights while the mast lights (and bell?) were replaced when gates got installed:
http://www.rxrsignals.com/Tennessee/Tullahoma/Anderson/

And it appears that these two crossings there retain the cantilevers and (most) of the original lights on them, while the other lights, bells, gate mechs, and gate masts are newer:
http://www.rxrsignals.com/Tennessee/Tullahoma/Lincoln/

http://www.rxrsignals.com/Tennessee/Tullahoma/Grundy/

It also appears that CSX prefers to leave the old masts/cantilevers alone if they're structurally sound when upgrading a crossing though.

After looking at some random streetviews of crossings in big cities near arenas and stadiums across the United States & Canada. I came across one in Seattle, WA of a SoundTransit train colliding with a vehicle at an active crossing that Google Maps caught near Safeco Field & CenteryLink Field.

A pedestrian crossing not far from the crossing. Back in 2011, there used to be a Safetran mechanical bell on one side of the signals. It was replaced with a WCH mechanical bell, unnecessary.
