Well, the Union Pacific as a name dates all the way back to 1862, though the UP we all know and love today dates back to 1969 with the formation of the final incarnation of the Southern Pacific, which merged with the third incarnation of UP in 1998:

I think this Smily threw me off a bit, as it seemed you were surprised to find out that UP was running trains back then (TBH though, UP and KCS are the only two US-based Class 1s to have names that date back to the 1800s).

No. I was surprised that there was an electric freight railroad thay recently. I also was really surprised that the UP owned and operated it, although now I think it might have been just a subsidiary of UP. The line isn't really grade separated either so that kind of shocked me that not only was it a UP electrified line, it was also on the same right-of-way that streetcars would have ran.

Yakima Valley Transportation Company was a subsidiary of the UP and ran freight until the early 1990's IIRC. Back when it was a subisdiary it held the record for oldest locomotive in operation on a class 1 (albeit a subsidiary), a Line Maintenance car from about 1906. My grandfather was a regular when they ran freight in the 1970's as well as my father who was a child at the time. If you own the "Northwest Kaleidoscope" dvd you can actually see my grandfather wearing a white hard hat in one of the YVT scenes.

Much of the track is now run by the "Yakima Valley Trollys" group. they give rides on the line using older streetcars.

Those are preemption signals, they prevent cars from stopping on the crossing.
