To let train crews know that the crossing is active. It's normally used in quiet zones, but that ain't a quiet zone!

Just a heads up to people.
The WABCO bell at Palmer Street has now, sadly been replaced with oddly enough a Safetran Type 2 E-Bell.

That was actually a US&S mechanical bell. Evers Street still has one though:

New bell is likely an NEG e-bell that's faded a bit.

The former third track at the crossing is still there so not necessarily incorrect.
I wonder if that signal would active when the crossing would activate.
That'd be a good place to film a train.

David is correct that it was a US&S e-bell. I hope to see that crossing on the site soon as I have sent the pictures to him, but they will be five years or older by the time they're up.

You mean
US&S m-bell? Feel free to get some newer pictures as well, though it is a shame that CSX replaced the US&S bell there, as it sounded nice with that GS Type 1.
