There is a way to go back to the old version. I think it is on the right side towards the top if I remember correctly. You also need to clear your browser's cookies once you do so your computer won't remember the newer version.
It's actually at the bottom right. Click on the gear and there should be an option. And when you return, at the top it will ask to make the change permanent.

I have to say it provides better and bigger views. Plus I choose a shortcut by going on one of my custom maps.

The new version can convert old google maps so I have no problem with it.

Lots of crossings I have seen have one, they are not that uncommon. I'll add my videos of these bells when I have more time.
