It's quite possible that work truck was within the range to activate the crossing. And if it was in motion, it'd keep the crossing active.

There's an active crossing just 1 street over.

Interesting how this crossing used a Canadian-style crossbuck

Alstom gate mech there as well:

The installation also reminds me of the signals in Spain.

Looks like the road was once two-way as well:
https://www.google.com/maps/@-35.850149 ... 312!8i6656

Going over another crossing finds us this unique old signal, though based on the sign on the signal, it doesn't work:
https://www.google.com/maps/@-35.851338 ... 312!8i6656

Another active Spanish-style crossing, with some more of those old signals that also appear to be abandoned in place:
https://www.google.com/maps/@-35.835291 ... 312!8i6656
And a closer look at the train activating the crossing:
https://www.google.com/maps/@-35.834492 ... 312!8i6656

And continuing up the line, we find these interesting solar-powered "signals" at a rural crossing:
https://www.google.com/maps/@-35.794585 ... 312!8i6656
It appears that the lights flash continuously regardless of if a train is nearby or not, likely working the same way as putting a beacon at a crossing here in the US.
