Zooming in shows there is another one next to the cantilever mast. I can only presume they are both functioning as additional sidelights to the main signals. Overkill for sure, but cheaper than replacing the whole set up.

The one in the median was likely placed to be better in the field of view of a driver attempting a u-turn...although the sidelights on the cantilever mast are aimed square at the median crossover. It's the only explanation I can think of. The one next to the cantilever probabaly displays "No Right Turn", or "Do You Feel Lucky, Punk?" Or some such thing.

On edit: Cruising up Lafayette reveals it is the same type of signal:

Cruising around close by finds two old classic signaled crossings in close proximity to each other, one with an identical "sidelight":

and two no-bell gateless

And while I'm on a scavenger hunt: How about a 4-way gateless in Lockport NY, in which two signals are on the LEFT side of the street, and not the right...

There's probabaly more in this town, but I don't want to hog them.

Notice the power lines that must be what it is. i think there are some crossings in springfield that cabman701 might know about.

thats probably when you want to use one of those hinged gates.

why not just put another gate on the other side of the street?

btw if it leans that far out i guess the gate holder that on it is rendered useless?

Indeed, it is useless.

We have one crossing that the gates do not go all the way up... but certainly not to that extreme.

I don't think there is room on the other side of the street for another signal due to that building. I think a hinged gate would have been the best option here.

And I agree with the gate guard... that was a pure genious who installed that! :glare:

I think it is possible. we have an installation in good ole fresburg on Blackstone where the gates are separated from the light mast and follow the same plane as the tracks. if something like this was done in the Charleston link, a separate gate could have gone between the edge of the building and the telephone pole. since this appears to be a one way street we could get away with no rear lights, which would alleviate any concerns of the telephone pole blocking anything. Then we could use those lovely gate guards! b :LOL2:

Sure the hinged gate idea would probably be a lot easier, but they just look hella retarded to me, i guess because you don't see hardly any of those around here.

btw dont you think there should be a mast flasher signal on the little side street on the cantilever side just in case of the occasional idiot that would wanna jump across the street to the other side street?

Are you talking about the little driveway in front of the cantilever, or the road on the other side of the tracks?

Although they are partially blocked by a telephone pole, there are rear lights on that mast signal with the gate.
