I'm pretty sure that they didn't appear here until around the late 90's (I presume). In fact, I'm pretty sure red and white striped gates didn't even exist before the 90's! (At least in Victoria.)

Agree with those time frames. I was a youngster, but started noticing "flat" gates more when I was 10, which would have been 1980. For instance, I remember that
this signal was installed around that time, and it would have never worked with an A frame gate.

Actually, they're slightly more easiler to find down here. It varies from state to state though. The easiest place to find them is Metropolitan Melbourne, were every single crossing on Metro tracks have them. (Including at least few with black and white gates)
