I've found a crossing Yaapeet, Victoria that is only protected by old yellow "beware of trains" signs! These signs are very rare and are normally only used on pedestrian crossings:

https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-35.767 ... 1664?dcr=0

Another crossing along the line in Jeparit also has some. However, they are used in the traditional way, as part of a pedestrian crossing:

On a different note, I also found this unusual setup at Rosehill, NSW. It has passive crossing signs, but also appears to have some kind of active single lamp warning signal (similar to those at some pedestrian crossings). Any ideas as to how this might work?

I like those yellow 'Beware of Trains" signs. There were similar signs in NSW although they were white, they were mainly used on pedestrian crossings but also on farm crossings and other small non-important crossings. Pretty sure they have all been replaced by the usual signage now. I do prefer the yellow signs though!

The crossing at Rosehill has failsafe warning lights, they consist of a single white light which is normally lit and only switches off when a train approaches. They usually have small signs underneath the lights which read something like "Light out indicates train approaching". There are lots of them around Sydney and they are mostly used around the tracks to warn workers of approaching trains. They are mostly placed near curves, bridges and other obstructions where the view of approaching trains is limited. It's rare to see them used on public crossings like this.

Here's another vintage crossing sign. The Canterbury Road East crossing in Lara still had the old brown "DO NOT CROSS WHEN BOOMS OR BELLS ARE OPERATING" signs in 2015 and chances are, it's still there today.

Some less faded examples at High Street, Dimboola (the image is from 2010, so they may be gone now).

Here's a yellow "BEWARE OF TRAINS" sign that's still present at nearby Horsham.

https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-36.707 ... 6656?dcr=0

Also found this nearby pedestrian crossing which has two Safetran Type 3 e-bells as audiable warning devices.
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-36.704 ... 6656?dcr=0
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-36.704 ... 6656?dcr=0

Strangely enough, there's a road crossing directly next to it which has Safetran e-bells too. So I don't see the point of having the e-bells at the pedestrian crossing.

Also, Chris96 is right about every Melbourne-Adelaide line crossing he passed having e-bells. Recently updated street view image shows that every crossing Google passed by also had e-bells.

This one's on the Hopetoun line.

Most of these crossings previously had hybrid bells, so the bell nazis must of gotten to this line (which ironically, is maintained by the ARTC).

Sad to see more m-bells gone :Awww: It could have been worse, at least they didn't install those horrible sounding adjusted GS type 1's.

The new underpass at Bomen opened yesterday so the closure of the crossing will probably take place very soon.

This line in Queensland appears to be out of service, but check out how far the crossbuck is from the track.

The next crossing has an interesting variety of advance warning signs.

This crossing appears to have Harmon 12 inch incandescent lights!

In Australia isn't it common for 12" lights to be replace by 8" lights?

Each state seems to be different. New South Wales and Victoria use 8 inch lights, while Queensland and South Australia have a mixture of both.

That's just weird.

Anyways, I found a video of the North East line from the early 80's and there are plenty of Teardrop bells throughout the video. I'm pretty sure the first crossing seen is Benalla-Yarrawonga Road (which had a Teardrop bell at the time). I think you also see the old gateless signals at Bank Street, Avenel at 1:28 (which had two Teardrops at the time). Ewings Rd (which has a hybrid bell). There's another gateless crossing (again with a Teardrop bell) at 4:15 but I have no idea where it is.

That steam train must have been a special excursion.

Pretty sure it was. Sadly, they don't run them anymore on the North East line due to it being converted to Standard Gauge a few years back.
