A crossing collision while traveling in reverse proved to be the end for this Conrail caboose:


When the RCO operator was confused, he/she managed to back the train right off the end of the rails and into a building:

Apparently, the bogies on this unit wanted to go separate ways:

no, that bridge picture right there is a weld that failed. someone did not properly weld on that bridge correctly, and overtime, the weld became brittle and was going to fail. The overweight of the train just added more and more stress onto the weld and boom. The weld either had air contamination in it (AKA Porosity), or there was no fusion between the weld and the base metal.

Pretty interesting. Never have seen the ruts left in the rails from an idling loco. What causes that? Did the wheels just get hot or something?

I also like the 3rd fire picture (link above). The person leaning out the other locomotive is classic. You can only guess what he is thinking (HOLY )!

When a locomotive is idling, you can frequently hear some electrical pops and snaps from the drive motors. Here it looks like one was really arcing, and the rails were the nearest grounding spot for the arcs.

Not to dig up something old, but had to correct this.

You are not hearing any arcing or anything of that nature. The pops and clicks are the air driers draining the main eq resivior of condensate which collects when air is pressurized.

The picture is the result of severe wheelslip, likely from RCO.
