This seemed like the best subforum for a non-grade-crossing accident to me.

That was the joke on the list where I found this link.
"In other news, the CP Portage Division has announced that it will be holding an open public cookout this afternoon..."

You know, I was listening to the farm report early before work a couple days ago (while waiting for the local weather segment). They were discussing that milk prices were getting too low and that the only way to raise prices would be to thin the herds. Perhaps the dairy council should be floating some money over to the railroad for the assist on this one?

And this is what happens when a train hits one stray cow in 1984:
ouch... Killed were 13 people and 1 cow. So I wouldn't laugh.

I know of a cow collision that caused a major accident at the turn of the century in St Helens, OR.
A cow sat on the tracks chewing his cud, when a train came along.
The cow didn't move at all despite the noise, and the train struck the cow.
The train derailed, and the locomotive's boiler exploded, killing the crew.
These collisions were very common in the days when American railroad ROW's weren't fenced in.
