By "One Eyed" I mean an active signal on one side, passive on the other:

That wooden mast w/ just the crossbuck looks new and like it might be temp. i think there was another signal there at one time and the railroad hasn't gotten around to replacing it.

I think it is permanent. That is obviously not a highly used road since it is dirt / gravel. Plus there is no problem with sight... the road is very straight so you can see the active signal fairly clearly from this side...

...except when there is a train occupying the crossing! :Tongue1:

Would be nice to place the (o)-(o) high up so that it could be seen above a train.
My fire department had a drunk run into a train stopped across the crossing at night.

This one is permanant. It noticed it several years ago before Josh photographed it.

When ONE wigwag signal was present, (were not most wigwag crossing one signal?) it was high enough to be seen over the old freight cars (before 2-level passenger cars and high automobile carriers.)

If the wigwag signal was on YOUR left, it was on your side of the track.
If seen on your right, it was beyond (other side of) the track.

Not all installs were upper quad though.
The lower quad one in Delhi, Colorado comes to mind.
That one certainly isn't visible from the opposite approach when a train is occupying the crossing... unless you count being able to see it in the spaces between cars. Perhaps moreso at night, but not really during the daytime.
I seem to recall quite a few where the banner and motor box were also mounted about 1/2 way up the mast of the signal as well.
