that area appears to be very industrialized, so i wonder if the light is for the road and for trains.

I wish i could see the sides that face the tracks to see if they light up.
My guess would be that they do not.

Is the trafic signal operated from either of two electrical switches, one on each side of the track?

Flashing yellow, then steadyellow, then steady red?

This is not a traffic signal. It's a double flashing red light that supplements the stop signs.

What do the switch boxes do - if that is whathey are?

Does that [o] constantly flash or just when a train is approaching? (Probably constantly flashing.)
