The freeway crossing posts got me intrigued and I started doing some searching. Found this pretty neat video showing a crossing with barrier gates... it starts at 1:22 in the video... that activation is for a light engine move. The crossing is shown again at 3:48 as the engines come back with cars and something a bit interesting happens this time.

That is one of four such installations in Wisconsin. The one in the video is in Monroe, the other three are in Madison:

I would assume that the gate would stop the same way a regular gate does if it comes into contact with a vehicle on the way down.
What I would like to see is a car trying to go through the gate after it has locked into position. Would be interesting to see the aftermath... and if the gate actually stopped the car from entering the crossing.
