Its a taller mast for sidelights, some railroads also use taller mast to add another windbracket for the gates.
Either way it just looks stupid with out anything between the crossbucks and the mast lights.

I agree. It would look better without the long mast

Looks like a brand new install.

True, otherwise it would be a little more dark. The crew probably has to come back there to put finishing touches on the signal.

Yes it is.A 2007 google street view image shows that that those signals where old cantilevers or gates,I cant remember. So that gate should have been put up not so long ago.

Believe it or not... NS just made some changes to several of their crossings in town. On crossings with cantilevers, including this one, they have changed the gate masts and have installed very tall masts... about as tall as the cantilevers themselves.

On a few of them, wind guards have been installed as Kight mentioned, but not on all of them. I will try to grab some pictures when I can.

Here is what I was referring to in the above post. This is one of the crossings that was changed. Gate mast went from this:

To this! With the bell it is now taller than the cantilver.

You will notice also this appears to be a stock mast pole... they have covered the hole for the wiring for the lights with duct tape.
