Watch this crossing be abandoned

This was the first crossing (after its junction with the WSOR ex-Milwaukee Road main line), and only signalized crossing on the four-block stub of the former Illinois Central Freeport (IL) to Madison, WI branch to survive after 1999. ICG first petitioned to abandon the line in 1980, and a series of short lines attempted to operate it until 1993, when it was embargoed south of Brunsell Lumber, the southernmost rail shipper on the line in Madison. Most of the line was torn out by the end of 1999, except for this short stub which was kept in as a headroom track for delivering coal to the UW-Madison power plant. The plant switched to natural gas in 2011, and stopped receiving rail service. The remaining tracks were torn out a few months later.
