Where it says "The gate in picture 1 seems quite long for a 2-lane road? "...
Streetview shows it's a 3-lane road, with the middle lane acting as either two lanes for one direction of traffic, or a left turn lane... so that gate actually IS protecting two lanes in the same direction.
