An LED bulb in an incandescent light

It appears the HMCR decided to be a bit cheap when one of the bulbs in this signal at Eagletree Lane died and decided to put an LED bulb in as a replacement:


Though, as you can see, the bottom half of the light isn't lit up due to the way the LED is designed (appears to be designed to project the light outwards and "downwards" (relative to the base, with the exception of at the base), which is probably why more railroads don't use these as replacements in incandescent lights.

I wonder if it would look any different if they took out the mirror. Let alone, what brand LED is in there?

I've also seen LED upgrades where the incandescent lenses are kept but at least the reflectors are taken out and the lights face outward as they're supposed to.

If they took out the reflector, you'd probably just see a bright spot in the center with it getting dimmer the further out you go from there.

I agree on the LED... it's probably like the replacement bulbs you can find for cars now. They actually look worse than incandescent's IMO.

I'm a big fan of what can be considered Classic Rock these days. My parents tended to listen to it a lot (well really, just my mom as my dad preferred NPR) when I rode around in the car when I was younger, so I got attached to it.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's one of those LED replacement bulbs for a car. I believe most signals are operated off of somewhere around 12vDC anyways. It'd also explain why light doesn't get projected out of the "top" of the bulb.
