It's an indication for trains to come to a stop right there since that's a diamond. It's also probably decades old because from the looks of it, neither of those lines receive much use if any anymore.

Nice find! That is pretty odd, maybe at one point one of the lines was a streetcar line. Definitely very old and very classic!

I think these sections of track do get some use, but not much. They're owned by a couple small shortlines.

IIRC, those are smash-boards or tilt-boards or something like that. It was basically an old way of controlling diamonds once upon a time.
