Here's a gateless 8" crossing, however a sidewalk at the crossing has gates!

Well, ya know that Maine pedestrians are more careless at crossings than motorists you know....

Hence speculation that these signs will be installed shortly. Evidently people don't see the gates at the automobile crossing and aren't expecting the ped ones and walking square into them...
