Modern diesels are amazing engines. Audi just brought the Q7 SUV over to the states with their V6 clean diesel. It's rated at 17 mpg city, 25 highway but I've heard that 30 mpg highway is not unlikely. To get the same amount of power in a gasoline powered Q7, you'd have to opt for the premium-grade guzzling 4.2 liter V8 which returns a mere 12 mpg city and struggles to get 17 mpg on the highway.

Next up on Audi's list of TDIs for the States is the A3 hatchback which is rumored to average 44 mpg. :WOOT: I wish they had offered my Santa Fe in with the diesel they offer elsewhere. Some have returned as high as 54 mpg with it. Meanwhile mine is a good highway tank at 27. :CloseEye:

Last thing I drove with a diesel was a Kenworth with a 14.7 liter Cat that made 500 horsepower, 1,800 ft/lbs of torque, and was backed up by a 13 speed transmission with a 3.73 final drive ratio. Loaded out at 80,000 pounds gross weight (tanker truck) the MPG would average 7.1. The highest MPG I ever saw was 9.4 (empty on level ground); the lowest was 0 (loaded, grinding up a steep hill).

The last two MPG ratings were from the onboard computer.

My RR truck is a diesel, and it is a damn good running machine.

I'ts perfect for me, as I do a lot of travelling, seriously, two and three thousand miles a month sometimes easy. Sometimes she will sit there idling in the hot sun for quite a while, and be just fine, as diesels love the heat. I got the 7.3 Powerstroke. Noisy? Smoky? ...Yep! And thats more reason to love it! And it will snatch your house off it's foundation.

I'll take power and durability over fuel mileage and clean emissions any day.

Even this truck in this video game sounds like a diesel.

Real smuckin' fart on that one... Running a diesel engine in a closed garage for several minutes... plus revving it up and blowing black smoke out the tailpipe.
