CR 62 #1, near Vincent, AL
Posted: Wed Apr 01, 2020 4:51 pm
*originally recorded on 3-18-20*
Signal on the left: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x20 inch lights and a General Signals Type 2 electronic bell.
Signal on the right: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x20 inch lights.
After catching NS 373 (and seeing the Masterblaster siren in Dunnavant), I continued on documenting crossings on the NS P Line. When I got down to the north side of Vincent, I noticed the automatic intermediate signal next to the crossing I was at was showing a red signal for an approaching train from my south. I waited a bit before deciding to continue on. When I passed the south end of the siding in Vincent (which I suppose is CP Vincent along this line), the signals for a northbound were still showing green. Just as I was about to start documenting this crossing, I heard a train horn to my south and quickly got set-up. And good thing I did too, as not long after, this northbound ballast train came flying through with an AC44C6M leading a Dash-9! This was easily my better catch of the day.
This crossing is a pretty decent one, though I can see why people would find it a bit boring. The signals here are a pair of old gateless signals from the Central of Georgia, which have had all of the original 8 inch lights and mechanical bell replaced. There isn't any street view at this crossing, so I'm not sure when the various pieces of equipment were upgraded here. However, as many of the other gateless crossings along (at least this part of) the P Line had one 12 inch signal and one 8 inch signal (with a General Signals e-bell on one of the signals) when street view came through in about 2013/2014, this crossing likely looked similar to those back in 2013/2014 as well.
The other crossing on CR 62 for those whom are curious is just a pair of crossbucks on the CSX Lineville Subdivision (though that crossing is actually within Vincent's city limits).
