I remember finding an old picture from the 50s with a gate mechanism that looked exactly like this, and the person who responded said they were a predecessor to WABCO triangle gates, if I remember correctly

Yep, those are WABCO AL70s, only with the original counterweight arms (either the old ones or the triangle ones) having long since been replaced.
