Mill Creek Loop #1, near Margerum, AL
Posted: Thu Jul 30, 2020 12:09 pm
*originally recorded on 7-29-20*
Signal on the left: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x20 inch lights, a General Signals Type 1 electronic bell, a Safetran gate mechanism, and NEG LED gate lights.
Signal on the right: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x20 inch lights, a dead General Signals (Type 1?) electronic bell, a Safetran gate mechanism, and NEG gate lights.
This was the last train I caught today. It was NS 101 with the same power that NS 16Z had earlier in the day: a UP AC45CCTE leading a UP SD70M. In fact, it was the exact same engines as well, so I suppose whatever power NS 101 had leading it was swapped out with 16Z's power to take it back to the UP in Memphis.
This crossing is a rather nice one, and one I'm glad to end off on. It features a pair of late-90s NS signals, both of which are still almost entirely original! Sadly, the bell on the closer signal is dead, which seems to be a common trend with crossings on the NS Memphis District West End, at least in Alabama.
Before the crossing starts, you can hear the nearby defect detector at MP 424 going off, followed by the train blowing for the Mill Creek Loop #2 crossing, which is the next crossing east of this one. That crossing features a pair of late-2000s NS signals, so it ain't as interesting as this one is, IMHO.
