*originally recorded on 8-2-21*
Signal on the left: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights and a General Signals Type 1 electronic bell.
Signal on the right: 2 pairs of Modern Industries 12x24 inch lights.
After being driven off of the AWP Sub due to a severe thunderstorm, I started my way back-up to Huntsville. However, I decided to hop off of I-65 and take US 31 for a ways up from Verbena to check on some of the crossings along the CSX S&NA South Subdivision. While I was driving along US 31, I heard a nearby defect detector go off, so I pulled over at this crossing to check the milepost, only to see a clear signal showing for a southbound at the end of the siding here. As such, I got set-up at this crossing, and not too long after, this CSX Q523 came through with an ES44AH on the head-end and an ET44AH working as the rear-DPU.
This crossing is quite a nice one, and I'm glad to have finally gotten it recorded. The signals here were originally an old L&N install from I believe the 1950s (maybe 60s), though in the 80s, the (original?) 8 inch lights here were all replaced by CSX with Modern Industries 12x24s. Then, in the late-90s, CSX replaced the signal on the far side with the current one, but since then, no major changes have occured here thankfully.
I'm quite glad to see there's a GS Type 1 here, which I'd suspected before might've been one but I'm definitely glad to have been able to confirm it. The old L&N signal on this side is great too, especially since I always like the look of later Modern Industries lights on older signals. All in all, this is a great little gateless crossing, and I'm glad to have gotten it recorded.
