Sullivan Street, Greenwood, SC
*originally recorded on 12-15-21*
Signal on the left: 2 pairs of RACO 8 inch lights, 1 pair of WABCO 8 inch lights, a RACO mechanical bell, a RACO gate mechanism, and RECO LED gate lights.
Signal on the right: 1.5 pairs of RACO 8 inch lights, 1 WRRS 8 inch light, a RACO mechanical bell, a RACO gate mechanism, and NEG LED gate lights.
After catching the westbound mixed freight at Cokesbury Street, I continued on over to this crossing to continue documenting them, only to find that an eastbound train was leaving the yard out here and coming east, so I set-up to record it was well. Not too long after I got here either, this eastbound train (not sure if it was a local freight or a mixed freight with all covered hoppers, but I suspect the former) came through with a single AC44CW for power. The locomotive was also a rather low-numbered one, being CSX 11, which was rather nice to see.
What's even better though was the crossing. Like the other two I'd filmed so far today, this was another SCL install from the late-60s/very early-70s. At some point, possibly not too long after these signals were installed, the front-left light on the right-hand signal here was replaced with a WRRS 8 inch light. Then, in the 1970s or early-1980s, the pair of lights closest to the road on the far signal were struck and replaced with the current WABCO 8 inch lights, with very thankfully no major changes since.
Of course, the star of this show is the almost all RACO set-up here. Most of the RACO 8 inch lights are still around, along with both RACO gate mechs which was great to see. Even better, however, is the fact that this is the only crossing in Greenwood to still retain a full pair of RACO mechanical bells! Both do still sound pretty healthy, although the closer one seems to clatter a bit as it rings. Hopefully these signals will remain unchanged for many more years to come though, but either way, I'm very glad I was able to record them when I did.
They/Them for me, please.
