*originally recorded on 12-20-21*
Signal on the left: 2 pairs of US&S 8 inch lights, a Safetran gate mechanism, and RECO LED gate lights.
Signal on the right: 2 pairs of US&S 8 inch lights, a WRRS mechanical bell, a Safetran gate mechanism, RECO LED gate lights, and a RECO gate light.
After catching the mixed freight in Coward, I decided to continue on north to Florence as I really wanted to get this crossing in action. Although a northbound had initially been lined through this crossing and it later appeared to my south, CSX downgraded the signal for it I believe to hold it for Amtrak to come through. A little over 1.5 hours after I got here, however, a southbound Amtrak Palmetto came through with a P42DC for power, the same one I'd seen on a northbound Palmetto the day prior, in fact.
This crossing is another rather nice one, featuring a classic ACL install from the 1950s that appears to still be mostly original. At some point in the late-90s or 2000s, CSX replaced both of the original WRRS gate mechs here with the current Safetran ones, but that thankfully has been the only notable change here, it appears. Both signals still retain a full set of their original US&S 8 inch lights, with the closer signal retaining its original WRRS mechanical bell, which still sounds very healthy, which I'm glad to see. Also rather nice to see that the closer signal still retains an incandescent gate light as well.
MobileRailSpotterRxR on YouTube recorded this crossing a good while back, though his video was just of a CSX bare-table stopped on it, so I felt it deserved a proper full video in action. Thankfully, some street lights right next to the crossing provided great ambient lighting at night, so I was able to get a pretty decent video of it in action. Hopefully CSX keeps these classic signals around for many more years to come, but either way, I'm glad I was able to film these signals when I did.
Believe this is also the northernmost crossing on the CSX Charleston Subdivision.
