*originally recorded on 2-23-22*

Signal on the left: 2 pairs of WCH 12x24 inch lights with Leotek EV Series LEDs, a Modern Industries mechanical bell, a GRS gate mechanism, and NEG LED gate lights.
Signal on the right: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights with Leotek EV Series LEDs, a GRS gate mechanism, and NEG LED gate lights.

After catching NS 102, I continued on my way over to South Carolina. While passing through Georgia, I heard something on the CSX W&A Sub near Adairsville, so I pulled off into Adairsville to see about recording a crossing there. Unfortunately, it appears that recently CSX upgraded all of the crossings in Adairsville (if not on the entire W&A Sub) to LED, including replacing all of the remaining 8 inch lights, so after documenting the upgrades, I just set-up at this crossing and waited, as it still retained both of the original gate mechs and bell from the L&N. After a little while of waiting, this southbound coal train came through with a YN3b ES44AH leading a YN2 AC44CW and another YN3b ES44AH working as the mid-train DPU.

This crossing, despite the recent LED upgrade, is still a fairly nice one. The signals here appear to have been installed by the L&N back in the 1970s, and were left largely unchanged for a few decades after. It appears that in the early 2000s, the original MI 8 inch lights on the closer signal got replaced with the current Safetran 12x24 inch lights (which were incandescent originally), but the crossing remained unchanged after. Then, sometime within the past year or so, CSX upgraded the closer signal to LED and replaced the remaining MI 8 inch lights on the far signal with the current LED WCH 12x24s. Thankfully, this crossing still retains both of the original GRS gate mechanisms as well as the original Modern Industries mechanical bell. Hopefully those will remain around for a good while longer. One of the lights on the far signal is also already tilted downwards.
