*originally recorded on 6-22-25*
Signal on the left: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights, a Safetran Type 3 electronic bell, a Safetran gate mechanism, and RECO LED gate lights.
Signal on the right: 2 pairs of Modern Industries 12x24 inch lights, a Safetran mechanical bell, a Safetran gate mechanism, and RECO LED gate lights.
After catching the Auto Train, I drove up to this crossing just north of Green Cove Springs to wait for my next train. After a little while of waiting, I was able to catch my second train of the day: the southbound Amtrak Silver Meteor flying through with a Phase V P42DC leading a Phase VII P42DC!
After the train passes, you can hear the defect detector just north of this crossing reading-out for it.
This crossing is another nice one, featuring what I believe is the last Safetran mechanical bell on the CSX Sanford Sub at it! It appears the signals here were originally installed by the SCL back in the late-70s, but, in the 1980s, the lights here were replaced with the current MI 12x24s by I believe the SBD. Then, in the mid-90s, the signal on the far side was replaced entirely by CSX. Finally, in the mid-2000s, CSX replaced the bell on the far side with the current Safetran Type 3 e-bell.
Thankfully, since then, nothing else too major has changed to this crossing, which is great to see. Sadly, the gong on the Safetran mechanical bell here sounds like it's in the process of cracking, if it hasn't already, so hopefully CSX gives it some needed TLC. The bell does still sound fairly healthy otherwise, so hopefully it remains here for many more years to come. Either way, I'm quite glad I got to record this crossing when I did.
