On the morning of July 23rd, I got on up and made the four hour drive out to Covington, TN, to try and get their siren test, along with Memphis's later in the afternoon. As I got to Covington with plenty of time to spare, I decided to go and get a couple of crossings that had been upgraded since EthantheRailfanner was last out here documented. As I arrived here, I heard the defect detector on the south side of Covington reading-out for a train, so I went ahead and set-up in case something was coming north. Sure enough, a few minutes later, I was able to catch my first and best train of the day: a northbound grain(?) train with a CN SD75I leading an IC Dash-9 for power!
This crossing is a pretty decent one, though features some fairly modern CN signals at it. It appears that, originally, there was an older pair of ICG signals here. However, in the early-2000s, CN replaced both of the signals here with newer ones. The crossing remained largely unchanged for a couple of decades for so, but, then, sometime after 2022, CN replaced both signals here again with the current ones. Interestingly, despite both signals here being replaced entirely twice over, the original relay case here still controls this crossing.
This crossing is also the first CN crossing I've filmed with WCH equipment, which CN trialed some back in the early-2020s. This is one of two CN crossings I've seen with WCH e-bells in person, the other one being the next crossing south at Liberty Avenue, which also now has modern CN signals exactly like these ones that replaced the old ICG signals that EthantheRailfanner filmed back in 2020. Definitely a bit nice to see some modern CN signals without Safetran Type 3 e-bells.
