*originally recorded on 8-9-25*
Signal on the left: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights, a Safetran mechanical bell, a Safetran gate mechanism, NEG LED gate lights, and a RECO LED gate light.
Signal on the right: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights, an NEG electronic bell, a Safetran gate mechanism, and RECO gate lights.
After catching the northbound mixed freight in Lanett, I hopped on back across the Georgia State Line to try and see about filming this crossing in downtown West Point next. After about a 6 hour wait (yes, really!), I was finally able to catch my third train of the day: a southbound CSX mixed freight with a trio of ES44AHs for power. Slightly amusingly, the first two locomotives on this train are numbered exactly 70 locomotives apart.
This crossing is another great one, and I'm glad I was finally able to record it as well. The signals here are an old mid-70s A&WP install, and are still mostly original, which is nice to see. In the 2000s, it appears, CSX replaced the rear lights on the far signal with the current pair of Safetran 12x24s. The crossing then remained largely unchanged until sometime earlier this year, when the closer signal sadly had its original 1st Gen Safetran mechanical bell replaced with an NEG e-bell.
Thankfully, most of the original A&WP-era equipment here still remains, which is nice to see. Both signals still have their original mid-70s Safetran gate mechs, along with all but one pair of their original Safetran 12 inch lights as well. The far signal even still has its original 1st Gen Safetran mechanical bell still, which is great to see, and thankfully it still sounds nice and healthy! Amazingly, both signals here also still have older diagonally-striped fiberglass gate arms on them, with the closer signal even still retaining a full set of older RECO incandescent gate lights on it! Sadly the tip one is very dim, but thankfully it does still (just barely) work. It's definitely been a good while since I last filmed a fully-incandescent gated CSX signal in action, so I'm glad to get get this one filmed, I doubt there are too many left on CSX's system these days. Both gate arms here are rather tired-looking these days, so I wouldn't be too surprised if they get restriped or even outright replaced at some point. Admittedly, the far signal's gate arm also appears to be quite short, and is easily one of the shortest I've seen that wasn't being used on a pedestrian signal/gate.
Hopefully this crossing remains unchanged for many more years to come, but, either way, I'm quite glad I got to record it when I did.
