Click on the actual YouTube link for that video (top part of the video) and look who has some negative comments about it.
And in the truck driver's defense... the signals did not start up until he was right on the crossing (he enters the picture immediately after the bell starts ringing). He would have had a hard time stopping and would have run the risk of being rear-ended.

TRUCK SAFETY 101
slow the HELL down when approaching a railraod crossing and be prepared to stop the lights came on well before he was on the crossing
the truck drive should lose his licences for 60 days
And 2 elton is right about the rebound of those gates IT CAN BE DANGEROUS
and half the time the gate gate doesn't work
and 3 a maintainer will still have to go out there and fix the gate lights
ps i also was the one who sent elton that video

NEEDS MORE TIME before gate begins to descend.
Isn't 6 seconds usual?
Should be even longer in industrial areas with many semi trailer rigs.
I can't fault the trucker.
Finally someone designs a gate which gives (hinges) rather than breaking.
Worked well!
(In 1966 I suggested this to a signal maintainer.)

well you didnt read the my post above
just go read that remember this is a "professional" truck drive not an advrage joe behind the wheel
id rather the gate brake off than hit my windshield those springs are bad and half the time dont work
and the time from lights starting up to gates starting to lower is 3-5 second have its longer than 5 seconds will make ppl think they can go under the gates you just CANT win with ppl check out this vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5TG-gDNKu0

Kinda late, but this is a Gate Saver from GS, The Gate Guard from WCH stops the recoil action.

yah i know that
but still the wch gate can flop around too http://www.wch.com/
click products
railroad signal
gate gaurd/video
also fyi i didn't know if you know but the third gate gaurd is from NEG http://www.nationalelectricgate.com/BCGateSaver.php
same company that makes the 7in gate lights i have seen
i call them all gate GAURD SPRING but
GSI=Gate Keeper
WCH=Gate Gaurd
NEG=Gate Saver
personally i wouldn't want to be next to a 20 ft gate flopping around like that id rather it just brake off
and there HAS been a case where a spring gate springed back and smacked someone who was waiting at a station for the train
THIRD
the gate springs id say half the time don't work i have seen plenty of broken gates that are on springs
theres a reason why SMART maintainers DONT use gate gaurds
well ok im in partial to these spings they scare me, make me curious, yet still want to see them go up and at the same time dont IDK
although i have YET to see a wch gate gaurd fail
so wch is a possible one i would use the neg one has some nice equipment thou including a counter that counts the times its been hit
so those are ok ones i guess but i have seen some fail
gs springs are useless though
ID NEVER USE GS PERIOD for gate gaurd lights or bells

I'm sure people are going to disagree with me...
But watching the original YouTube video that started this subject again... the recoil on that gate is hardly enough to injure someone or cause any significant damage to a vehicle or anything.
And it looks as though that particular situation happens quite frequently at that crossing. I'm sure the maintainer is glad that it is on that signal, otherwise he would be out there just about every day fixing a broken gate.
