Oddity from North Carolina y'all

I've been seeing cantilevers with no mast lights quite a bit; especially with light-less four quads. An example:

I have to agree, it does look a bit odd.
I'm sure a few people on this forum might disagree with this next statement... but honestly, are 4 more sets of lights on each of those masts really necessary?
Say you are driving up on that crossing and it activates. If you can't see those 2 sets of lights directly above the lane you are driving in, then you probably shouldn't have a license. There are no sidewalks or anything else in that vicinity except the road. So all those extra lights would just be overkill in my opinion and could be put to better use somewhere else. Just my

worth.
By the way... I believe the subject line should say Virginia instead of North Carolina... correct?

Actually, it is really North Carolina. The Virginia link was what was searched for before going out to North Carolina.
Here's my

on the lights on the masts...
I feel there should be two pairs on each mast, cantilever and mast signals both. The reason is for the gates. There's that very few amount of drivers who proceed just as the gates are not up all the way, instead of fully "up". The lights turning off would confirm that the gates have fully risen, instead of seeing them wiggle back and forth.
It's kind of a stupid opinion, but I do want to see another 8 pairs of lights installed there.

Sorry about the confusion. Mike is right: I was snooping around in ol' Virginny, and followed a line down to Nawth Cara-Lie-nah.

I spotted a few just around the Durham area. I see nothing has changed since the last time I lived in that neck of the woods. As I recall, the unofficial state tree of North Carolina is a Chevy Camaro wrapped around a telephone pole...

Speaking of odd... check out this setup on an out of service line in Durham (complete with old wishbone gate). Where in the world did they put a crossbuck here originally, I wonder?

Interesting.
Is this done on just private company sidings?
Those crossbucks cost money!
Maybe this is done at manually operated crossing signals.
