Seems that Americans are copied everywhere.
Does anyone have their own original designs?
Or did we copy Britain?

No real surprise on this one. Immediately after World War 2, only the U.S. had a manufacturing base that wasn't bankrupt or bombed to rubble. For the next decade pretty much everything that was manufactured came from this country. If the design was solid and sensible - as crossing signals appear to be, there's no reason to change it.

Who invented the design?
Design based somewhat after Dolly Parton?

Although, I think that standard light arrangement began to appear alongside wigwags (like the early Griswolds with the rotating stop signs) a decade or two before her time.

I don't know who gets credit for the design, but I know it predates Dolly by a bit. There's a mental picture for you: Dolly flashing alternately... Holy Cow!

Maybe that's where the 12"x24" came from?
