A close-up of the grade, notice anything odd about it? |
For some reason, rather than having the two seperate tracks side-by-side, the Mid-South Live Steamers had the two tracks overlap!
Not entirely sure why this was done, but I'm guessing they wanted to reduce the size of the crossing, along with simulating a one-track crossing without having to use switches on either side of the crossing, and risking an accident due to a misaligned switch.
According to FanFan61618, this unusual track arrangement on the crossing causes the trains to make an "unusual sound" when going over the grade.
Mid-South Live Steamers is a non-profit 1/8-scale model railroad club located within the Maury County Park in Columbia, TN, next to the TSRR line.
They have three events each year the public can ride the trains for free, one in the spring, one in the fall, and one in the "winter". The railroad club is also run by donations.
The Mid-South Live Steamers also have another crossing along their line, protected by a single crossbuck, but it wasn't photographed. It can be seen here on Street View though.
