Facing southeast. Baldwin #2 can be seen in the background. |

Closeup side view of the Griswold lights and RACO mechanical bell. |
Here's a crossing with two 8" Griswold gated signals, right next to a crossing with non-gated Griswold Type B signals (Baldwin St. #2)!
The two crossings do not function as a double crossing. When the gated signals are active, the gateless signals are inactive, and vice versa.
There is a RACO mechanical bell on the signal seen in pictures 1-4.
Facing northwest. |
The northwestbound signal.

Views down both tracks looking northeast. |

Picture 9 is a track view southwest.
I recall that there used to be 2 TRACKS signs here. If you look closely at pictures 2, 4 and 6 you can see discolorations on the masts between the lights and crossbucks that seem to confirm this, even though the FRA history does not mention them. They really should be reinstalled, since both tracks are still active. The track in pictures 8 and 9 is the main line through Madison. The track in picture 7, and on the far right of picture 9 is the beginning of a spur for delivering coal to the Madison Gas & Electric power plant, whose smokestacks can be seen in the distance of picture 9. |
|
The relay case. It serves for both this crossing and Baldwin #2. |
The crossing is in action for a WSOR train! This was the same train seen at Whitney Way. |

The train finishes, and the signals are just about to deactivate in picture 19.

All pictures were taken on August 3, 2007.
A little personal history related to this crossing: When I attended Marquette Elementary School and Georgia O'Keeffe Middle School from 1994 through 1998, some days I would walk home from school through this crossing. Consequently these (and Baldwin #2) were the first crossing signals I examined up close when I was old enough to remember clearly. In this way, Griswold became the first signal manufacturer that I learned of. This is also how I recall that there used to be 2 TRACKS signs here.
