This crossing has some interesting features about it. First and foremost are the two B&B ARMR full-barrier gates. These were installed sometime during 2004. The FRA reports say the crossing had two regular gates before then, but I recall it being gateless. This was one of the first installations of these gates at a US railroad crossing ever. This crossing is also the one pictured on the 102 Gates page.
There is a General Signals electronic bell on top of each gate mechanism housing, as shown in picture 5.
The EXEMPT signs are due to the crossing's proximity to the intersection of Whitney Way and Old Middleton Road.
Perhaps the strangest thing about the crossing is the combination of lights. On the front lights of both cantilever mast light setups, and both median signals, an 8" RACO incandescent light is paired with an 8" WCH light with a clear L.E.D. in it! The overhead cantilever lights, and the rear lights on the cantilever masts and median signals, are all 8" RACO incandescents. This makes for a total of four 8" WCH clear L.E.D.s at the crossing. Also, as seen in pictures 3 and 4, some of the bracket arms are longer than the others, and hold the lights far off to one side. I don't know if the crossing originally had Griswold lights, or if the Griswold center plates were used just because they were what was available.
Pictures 6 & 7 face north and northwest. Picture 8 is the northbound counterpart of picture 3. |

Here's the crossing in action on August 3, 2007. No changes had been made to the crossing as of that date. |

Some rather unfortunate changes have been made to the crossing. All lights are now 12" x 24" WCH lights with L.E.D.s. Worse yet, the cantilever arms are gone, but the old RACO cantilever posts were left behind! According to state railroad commission documents, this was planned this way and will probably remain like this. Pictures 22-23 face north. Picture 24 shows the rear of one of the new 12" x 24" WCH lights. Picture 25 looks west, same as picture 13. Pictures 22-25 were taken on August 14, 2009. |
