This crossing is really interesting. It is a 1979 Safetran install put in by the short-lived Goodwin Railroad, then operator of the line. The signal on New Salem Street, however, was added in 1988 when that street was extended to connect with North Main. By the mid 1990s, the P&L, who by then were the operators, were running few trains through Laconia (revenue freight ended circa 1991), so they was decided to "neuter" (removed lights and gates) the signals in 1995, so they wouldn't have to maintain them for such little use, and the crossing has been flagged ever since. I believe these signals last functioned in 1991, when passenger excursions briefly operated to Laconia daily before the trip was cut to Lakeport the following year. Ironically, the railroad began re-installing signals at nearby crossings a few years later, but this crossing still remains passive. The removed equipment remains in storage and the circuits are still intact, so the signals could be reactivated in the future if need be.

This crossing is operated by the P&L (DBA Granite State Scenic Railway, formerly Hobo & Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroads), but It should be noted excursions from Meredith only operate into downtown Laconia on Sundays in the summer months, and for other special occasions and equipment moves.
