Question about rail vs trucks
Hello, i probably sound super naive but i am only 17 so forgive me lol. But i want to get a few opinions about something. I live in Canada and there is a once customer line in my town that is famous for it's sidewalk and street running, the Burford Spur here is the story: This line was run by CN ...

Re: Crossing bell stopped working but the lights still flash
The bell is mechanical. This has not happened before. and it has held up in colder temperatures in the past. Are railroads required to replace the bell? This line is not owned by the railroad though it's owned by the single customer on the line

Crossing bell stopped working but the lights still flash
There is a crossing in my town that is on a small, ancient spur line (The SOR Burford spur, look it up) it sees one train per week and the signals are quite old. But last time a saw a train there(a few days ago) the lights flashed like usual but the bell was silent, do you know what could cause this ...

How old is the standard crossing horn sequence?
I've always wondered about the standard long long short long horn sequence at crossings, does anyone know how long this rule has been around? the earliest i could find was early 1940s, i saw a railroad safety film from the time and you can clearly hear the horns blowing the sequence at a crossing. I ...

What kind of horn is this?
One of my favorite locomotives (now scrapped unfortunately) is Ottawa valley raillink # 4205, a GP9M. I never got to hear it's horn blowing but it appears to be a 3 chime horn with one of the bells reversed, take a look:

Re: How old are these signals?
Is there any way to find out the exact age of the signals? Is there a date anywhere? I know my dad said they were old when he was a kid back in the 80's

Unusual setup in St catharines, ontario
At first glance this looks like your typical setup, but upon closer inspection you will notice that one lane has a gated signal yet the other lane has a simpler signal with only flashing lights. no idea why. https://www.google.com/maps/@43.1400419,-79.2060639,3a,47.3y,64.72h,85t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4 ...
