Any photos of relay which makes lights alternately flash?

As a 6-year-old boy, a signal maintainer showed the relay to me.
I recall that it was glass-encased and the case was on springs. (All were.)

I could not figure out what controlled (slowed) the relay flip-flop rate. (I'd expect it to flip-flop as fast as it could.)
Back then it was about one flash per second.

That is what I recall!
Wish the photos were taken closer. I had to enlarge to read.
One was 40 to 60 flashes per minute.
The other 40 to 45 fpm. (I recall they had a slower flash rate years ago.)

Anyone knowhat caused the relay to slow to the desired flash rate?
