Amtrak painting "Heritage" locomotives

Can't have signals without railroads, so talk about your favorite locomotives, railroads and any other (non signal) railroad related stuff.

Amtrak painting "Heritage" locomotives

Post by illinoistrains »

Amtrak is painting P40DC #822 in the retro Red White and Blue (Phase III) to commerate their 40th anniversary! The attached photo i found is currently the only photo of this unit, but when i find more i will post them

There is also and unconfirmed rumor that they plan on painting another P40/42 in the original Red Black and Silver "bloody nose/Rudolph" paint.

Read this on the Trains Mag. website today:

WASHINGTON – Amtrak will celebrate its 40th Anniversary this year, and the company is planning to operate a special train to commemorate the event. Amtrak has told employees that the Beech Grove, Ind., shop is renovating one F40, one P40, three baggage cars, and an Amfleet food service car for a special 40th Anniversary “museum train.”

The baggage cars will be turned into museum cars that will display exhibits of historic advertising, uniforms, photographs, and other items. The Amfleet car will serve as a combination retail center and rotating exhibit space. The train will travel across the country on various Amtrak routes.

The company is also planning to repaint four locomotives in historic paint schemes to help celebrate the event.

Amtrak, the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, began operations on May 1, 1971, when it took over most of the nation’s intercity passenger train service from private railroads.

The first views of the F40PH to be restored just became public.

Also, on Feb. 18, Amtrak 66 (Phase 2 heritage locomotive) was reported as heading to Beech Grove, so its just a matter of time before we get to see it!

Wow that thing looks great. It actually was in a "retro" paint scheme before, Phase 4, and I thought it looked nice, but that is definitely nicer!

Hope the people along the Monon Sub didn't think it was a joke that people were saying the Phase II Heritage unit was released, because indeed 66 in Phase II was released on that day. Here is a video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhER86FdwWM. Pretty similar to 145 except the white is smaller. Also down below I put what I think the Phase IV heritage, #184, might look like. Original drawing by Michael Eby, colors by me.

EDIT: Changed picture after noticing I put 1971 Amtrak 2001 not 2011.
EDIT 2: Changed picture again after thinking about the fact all heritage units' bottoms are black instead what the originally were (Phase III only)
