Re: Traffic Lights
Ugh, I don't understand why it's so popular to put traffic signals on span-wire in the Southeast. Not to be offensive, but it really looks ghetto.
Well,

in Missouri we use span-wire in construction zones because its easier to move the lights to a different lane if you need to
In the south span-wire withstand winds and are cheap
after hurricane Ivan almost all lights on poles were gone but some of the lights on span wire stayed

Re: Traffic Lights
I have no shortages of traffic lights in my area, probably near 50 of them within 10 miles from here. I'll post a few later on when I can.
Re: Traffic Lights
I'm gonna sound off here... but I absolutely hate when they do that! With the sophistication of street mounted sensors, and on some newer installations, motion sensors on the poles... why theweatherdan882002 wrote:the crosswalk signals control the light
Case in point: I have to be at work at 6:00 a.m. I always get caught at this light waiting to turn left onto the main road. I have to wait almost 3 minutes for the main road lights to change red and my side to turn green. The ped signals for the main road show walk and sit there like that for at least 2 minutes before the FINALLY start to countdown and I know the light is going to change. There are no pedestrians at that time of day and maybe 5 cars on the road.
Just irks me to no end (if you couldn't tell)...

Re: Traffic Lights
They do that all the time here in Arizona. Many lights have the walk indicator for about 60-90 seconds, then at the two traffic lights that do have countdown timers, they start counting down at either 20 or 23 seconds.

all the lights here are starting to use cameras like this so at 5:30 am it senses when Im approaching and changes the light before I come to a complete stop

Re: Traffic Lights
Well, IDK if it's just a problem or if they actually programmed to do that because normaly the crosswalk signals don't activate unless the call button is pressed.cabman701 wrote:I'm gonna sound off here... but I absolutely hate when they do that! As a matter of fact, a pedestrian signal for the side streets used to do the same thing, except in that case, it DIDN'T control the light (at least not in the same manner). It would automatically go to "walk" and then start to countdown, but if there were cars over the sensors in the street, the light didn't change when the countdown reached "0". As a matter of fact, often times (especially when there was little to no traffic), the light would stay green until until the countdown had completed. A bit of a flip-flop compared the main road. I found out today that on the main road, the signals go to "walk" for about 6 or 7 seconds, and then count down from "12" (strange #, but that is the case). It's been so long since I've seen the side streets active, I forget what they start on.
Here's a couple of pics from that intersection:

- One of the crosswalk signals (the one that activates is on the opposite side of the street).

- Taken almost directly under the light (I was waiting to turn left when I snapped this).
