It makes sense to do this in high population areas because you are going to have pedestrians on almost every cycle, but not outside of downtown. That is why they have the "push to walk" buttons. If people aren't smart enough to use them... too bad!
yah I know in the cities and by schools they are always active, I'm fine with that because its going to get used a lot anyway.
But at lights in the middle of nowhere, I don't even see the point of Pedestrian signals at ALL, Oh yah its for incompetent people who cant figure out who has the right of way I swear its more of a right to drive instead of a privileged anymore. 3 drivers failed to yield to my ROW, 2 ran red lights one was brushing her hair and kept slamming on the breaks in front of me, all in one days commute!!!!!

Many people found it to be a bit fancy when compared to the regular "NO TURN ON RED" signs. The thing about these is, they only light up when they're absolutely needed. I've seen these mostly at crosswalk signaled intersections and they light up only when the crosswalk signals are active (obviously so no pedestrians get run over). In the case of the intersection in the picture I showed you, the sign lights up when the other side of the road has a green left turn arrow.

I like the idea. I think it is more likely to be obeyed than just a plain metal sign that a lot of people seem to think they can ignore.

Pensacola Fl has one of course street view still shows the old sign. Here is one in Webster Groves Mo it lights up no turn on red and people run this light all the time, even to the point where Webster Groves PD might photo enforce it

Well, I've been too busy to mention it, but they only fixed 1/2 the problem, haha. The crosswalk signals no longer activate, but the light still only stays green for about 20 seconds. If there's no calls from the side streets, it'll stay green longer, but as soon as there is a call, it changes to red.

I know this is an old post, but in my area, some signals count down, then they have a walk indication again.
Yeah, a couple of signals in my area do that also. The only time the light will change to red is if a car triggers the light to change on the side street (or I suppose a pedestrian triggers the walk signal for the crossroad).
Otherwise, the walk signal on the main road will continue to cycle to don't walk (flashing) then back to walk. Just another example of stupid programing in my opinion.

This road (Macarthur Blvd) was just extended about 2 miles from the south edge of town to Interstate 72. The road has been open since September of 2010. There are 2 intersections that techincally do not exist yet as the crossroads to Macarthur have not been extended yet. These intersections are fully signalized and THE LIGHTS ARE TURNED ON! I have read that it could be 3 to 4 years before the intersections are actually completed.
There is no Streetview yet... but here is a sattelite picture where you can see the signals that constantly stay green 24 hours a day:
I have already noticed that some of the LED's in these lights are starting to fail. What a complete waste of money and electricity! I can understand actually installing the lights while they were building the road, but they should be bagged and shut off until they are actually needed.
