Cruise Control

After a nearly 2,000 mile drive to school, I am in Overland Park and have a newly renewed passion for cruise control. Sure, having it on a 30-mile jaunt from Portland to Salem is nice but on the 600 miles from Denver to Kansas City it is a gift from the gods. Personally, I will never own a car without it.

So...who has cruise control on their cars and if you do, how do you feel about it?

I'll probably be the minority here, but my '99 VW Beetle doesn't have cruise control.

My 2005 Mercury Sable has it...and I've used it a couple of times. When I went down to visit Elton, I used it almost the whole way. The resume button is also very useful...if you have to hit the brakes for some reason...you just tap that resume button and it goes back to the last setting you had it at...

My '08 Ford Fusion has cruise control, which is quite a little out of the ordinary. You can actually adjust the car's speed with the 2 "Set" buttons (one with a "+", and the other a "-") on the steering wheel instead of using the pedals.

You can adjust your speed on most cruise controls... usually there is a "Coast" option to slow down, and either the "set" or "resume" button will allow you to speed up. On my 92 Town Car, if you tap the resume button, you will accelerate 1 MPH for each tap. Or you can hold it down and it will accelerate rapidly. The coast button does the same thing, but in reverse. If you are not sure how your's works... check your owner's manual.

By the way... I moonlight as a school bus driver part time. A good majority of our buses have cruise control, which as Andrew said is a gift from the gods if you have to go out of town.

My Santa Fe actually has a dedicated 'cancel' button which is nice. The system is purely mechanical so when it's active, it's actually pulling on the throttle cable under the hood. This means there is slack in the gas pedal while the system is active and if you know how to do it, you push the accelerator until you get to the end of the slack and then hit cancel. This way you avoid that sudden release of the throttle and you can slow on your own terms. Then, hit resume when you're ready to rock and roll. You can't do this with electronic throttles.

The new Santa Fe actually has two lights; one that shows the system on 'CRUISE' and the other tells you that it's active 'SET'. Mine just says 'CRUISE'.

I have it in my Grand Prix.In my 05,it was on the steering wheel.In my 08,it's back on the turn signal switch as in other GM cars,especially older ones.

My '00 Hyundai Accent didn't have it, but my '00 GMC Sonoma does. I use it whenever I can, mostly on the way to school as traffic is very heavy (sometimes stop-and-go) on the way home.

On a somewhat off-topic note, my Accent didn't have A/C, but the Sonoma does, so despite my MPG being cut in half, at least I have features I didn't have before.
