Re: Tracks out of service
Near one of the relay cases I found the cement pad where a signal once stood:
https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=2 ... 21.45&z=21
Near the other relay case, I found four bolts in a square sticking out of a sidewalk. I think it might have been another signal:
https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=2 ... 16.99&z=19
Th ROW went south too.
Here's the remains of a grade:
https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=2 ... g=180&z=20
And here is a rail:
https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=2 ... g=180&z=19
https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=2 ... g=180&z=19
There appears to be a little bit more rail here (look in the grass near the active rail line):
https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=2 ... g=180&z=21
https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=2 ... g=180&z=21
https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=2 ... g=180&z=21
Found more rail:
https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=2 ... g=180&z=21
https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=2 ... g=180&z=21
Here are a couple more abandoned crossings in Huntsville, AL:
Memorial Parkway:
https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=3 ... 1,,0,10.38
There is a concrete pad for a signal here, although it is kinda hard to see:
https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=3 ... 31,,1,9.15
The L&N Dr. crossing was abandoned as long as I could remember. It no longer exists because the road was paved over, the tracks were removed, and the abandoned lumber company was torn down:
https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=3 ... 9,,0,19.01
Remains of pavement markings:
https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=3 ... 7,,0,30.47

Re: Tracks out of service
Looks like that stubbed-off second track at the crossing just posted in "Google Maps Scavenger Hunt" curved around to the south, then back to the west and across the road again to reach its destination (a small yard that appears to still be in service from the other end).

Re: Tracks out of service
This should have a topic in itself.
The famous Saluda Grade 4.7-5.1 % Grade making it the steepest standard-gauge mainline railway grade in the United States.
Heres an old railroad training video on the grade
Sadly NS suspended service from Landrum, SC and Flat Rock, NC in December 2001

Re: Tracks out of service
Here's a Defunct crossing not far from where I live on Burgress Avenue near Walker, LA
From the RXR pavement on the road, the advance warning signs have been removed on both sides.

A view of the crossing heading westbound

A view of the crossing heading eastbound, with yet, another backwards crossbuck

View of the tracks going south (View of the backwards crossbuck)

Re: Tracks out of service
A carryover from the US&S teardrop discussion. It looks like this was done intentionally, with the crossbucks modified for their new purpose (look at the third one)!

The next one had both full cantilevers with bells and 8" lights left behind, with "bike crossing" signs added to the masts!

Also to the north:freebrickproductions wrote:To the north:Josh wrote:Kokomo, IN

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source= ... 02411&z=19
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 4&t=h&z=21
Spur:
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 5&t=h&z=19
Looks like the line's active to the north, so to the south:
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 5&t=h&z=19
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 3&t=h&z=19
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 9&t=h&z=19
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 6&t=h&z=19
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 1&t=h&z=19
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 8&t=h&z=19
Goes back in service further south as-well.
However, it is abandoned again even further to the south so...
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 9&t=h&z=19
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 6&t=h&z=18
I think it goes back in service yet again further south.
However, there is an abandoned spur to the south as-well:
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 0&t=h&z=18
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 8&t=h&z=17
And the line goes back out of service again, but it goes in two directions.
First direction:
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 6&t=h&z=19
Abandoned signal:
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 8&t=h&z=19
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 1&t=h&z=19
Another abandoned signal:
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 9&t=h&z=19
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 1&t=h&z=19
Sad:
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 1&t=h&z=19
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 4&t=h&z=20
The second direction:
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 7&t=h&z=19
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 6&t=h&z=20
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 9&t=h&z=20
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 9&t=h&z=19
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 5&t=h&z=19
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 6&t=h&z=20
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 5&t=h&z=20
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 7&t=h&z=20
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 1&t=h&z=20
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 8&t=h&z=20
There were signals at this crossing:
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 7&t=h&z=20
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 4&t=h&z=20
There were signals at this crossing too:
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 4&t=h&z=20
Former spur along the line:
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 6&t=h&z=20
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=North+Oh ... 1&t=h&z=20
The line goes back into service a little bit farther.

Holton St. and Townsend St. on the old Milwaukee Road Beer Line here in Milwaukee. The ROW had already been developed into a trail at the time of the Streetview images. The rails in the crossing have since been removed, but that rusty signal equipment box is still there!
