8" Strobe lights?

Starts @ 1:54. I've never seen anything like this in action before. Looks like it would be much more effective during night hours too.

Neat find!

I did some Streetview surfing and found the crossing:

Those strobe lights are on both sides of the crossing. Streetview is a bit skiddish in that area though... if you "drive" through the crossing you get thrown in to what looks like a time warp or something... :LOL4: ...but you can see the other signal once you are through.

Yeah, I'm a BBS idiot. I tried and I tried using that fancy button and it didn't work. Whatever I was pasting just gave me [SpooTube]URL[/SpooTube]

It was a way for notifying motorists if a train is coming since even before the crossing was more visible trees were in the way. It's located on Hamburg Turnpike in West Milford, NJ on the New York, Susquehanna & Western.

I filmed the same crossing.

Here's my video:

They are used here because at one time there trees that obstructed the view of the crossing. The trees were removed, but the strobes were not.

This crossing is one the New York Susquehanna and Western main line.

The strobe lights seem to flash rather randomly... is that how they really flash or is the camera just not picking them up consistently?

It's probably just the way the camera picks them up. The same thing happened when I took videos of strobe traffic light lenses. The camera frames don't line up with the fast flashes.
