Crossing closed... but signals remain

Post by cabman701 »

This caught my attention: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.p ... 79&nseq=40

Looks like the road has been closed at this crossing for quite awhile... however the signals remain for pedestrians. Looks like that is due to this being a quiet zone: http://goo.gl/maps/T38UP

What a coincidence, because I stumbled upon that crossing like two weeks ago on Google Street View

What caught my eyes about the crossing was how one mast has 12x24" LEDs and the other mast has 8" incandescents.

I've encountered Erik S. trackside many times. He's the luckiest SOB around here when it comes to bagging the good stuff, and he seems to repel clouds through sheer force of will (whereas I seem to attract them!).

Dude has a decent singing voice, too.

There are a few crossings like that in Waukesha, and a few others along the CN main in southeast Wisconsin I believe. They're the only places on that line where you'll find any 8" lights left.

This would have been a good idea before the crossing was retired to vehicles. You add gates or not make it a quiet zone but noooooo... it had to be a pedestrian only crossing. :Curse1: :Curse1: :Curse1: :Curse1: :Censored: :Censored: :aaargh: :Curse1:

Some cities (and railroads) are quite adamant about reducing the number of level crossings for vehicles... especially in towns where you have lots of crossings grouped together.

I think this was a good alternative to just closing the crossing entirely and removing the signals. They would have had to put a huge fence up to keep pedestrians out.

Just add gates, problem solved.

I would like to see the signal and gates separate, that would make a good signal.

It's funny they kept the crossing open to pedestrians. There are a bunch here in Ohio that were closed to vehicles AND pedestrians. Go big or go home!!!

Also, no signals here, but a crossbuck, anyway:

The crossing is closed but one signal was left standing:
