Check out that BAD sign on the left edge of the frame :Eeeeek:

So I decided to advance forward to see what was leading this train:

Ah yes, the infamous CraIG CountY sign.

I wouldn't call that private crossing "active" though, since it's only crossbucks.
Good point. I found a train anyway!!!

Another North Carolina oddity... no front lights, and why the extra crossbuck on the telephone pole?

This crossing has changed a lot since 2007... what was there before had all 12 inch Lex C's and no gates.

I think on the new set up, the gate on the side road is a bit much... people can still safely turn left even when the crossing is occupied.

All that just for an extra gate holder. Not sure why they would only choose to do the one side. Did you see how they attached the bell?

Belmont, North Carolina. Check out how short these mast signals are:

Here's an active shot from 3 days ago:
http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.p ... 8&nseq=142

They just seem to love their cantilevers without mast lights in this state:
https://www.google.com/maps/@35.230408, ... 312!8i6656

Going back to the original crossing with the short masts... just a block northeast, on a separate set of tracks. This is... interesting...
https://www.google.com/maps/@35.2424444 ... 312!8i6656

Following that same separate line above to the north... after quite a bit of what looks to be out-of-service track, we find this. Hard to tell if the track is actually being used, the rails look quite rusty:

Came across this on GSV in my hometown... not sure how the top of the cantilever got whacked off. I'm guessing an over-sized truck hit it, but the rest of it is still standing??

GSV must have passed through here twice, because in this picture the top of it (that was laying on the ground) is gone:

Here's what it used to look like:

Sure wish I had known about this at Christmas when I was up there. Would have gone out to see what it looks like now.

Also found this interesting work going on just a few blocks from where I used to live. Replacing concrete ties with new concrete ties?

More work going on a few blocks north:
